Song Review:
The song "I'm just Ken", is an iconic pop/pop-rock song which was sang by Ryan Gosling, and written by Mark Ronson alongside Andrew Wyatt . The song is from the movie "Barbie", in which Ken fights for the love of his life Barbie. The lyrics of the song tell a story of how Ken's love, which is unreciprocated by Barbie, is affecting him. Ken sings this song, questioning whether he is "kenough" for her, and will she ever see him as a lover and not just a friend.
I first heard of this song from memes that came shortly after the release of the movie .At first I laughed at it, but soon realized the deep meaning of the song, the internal struggles of Ken, whom I now relate to. As the song was made for a movie, it was likely made to improve the mood of the scene, and embody Ken's current emotional state in that scene. The emphasis on his emotions made it easier for the listeners, including myself, to relate to Ken.
The first verse of the song is about Ken's efforts in trying to impress Barbie, and how it did not work out for him. The song continues to detail how he feels about the situation, confused as his emotions "drive him insane". In the line "All my life, been so polite, But I'll sleep alone tonight" states that even though Ken was respectful, he failed in getting Barbie to like him back.
The chorus shows how Ken tries to reclaim himself, saying that anywhere else he would have been a ten, attractive and handsome. He asks a rhetorical question, where he asks if its his destiny to live in "blond fragility", personally I do not know what he was talking about since I'm not blond. Ken continues to state that Barbie only sees him as a friend, but he sees her as someone he wants to be in a relationship in. He asks another question "What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?"
The next verse is where Ken somewhat finds his true feelings about the situation. He knows he wants to experience love. He asks if its wrong to show his true feelings, or if it isn't attractive if he shows his true self. He asks if its his moment or is he just being delusional. Then he says "I'm not a dreamer", marking his newfound confidence in himself.
The song now reaches un upbeat part, where Ken feels energetic, ready to do what needs to be done, ready to face whatever happens next. The chorus repeats twice, first the same as how it was done after the first verse, then second slightly altered with more confidence in himself standing strong in his own identity.
To conclude, I think that "I'm Just Ken" is a very relatable song that embodies the feelings of the character Ken. Ken goes through his emotions, finding out how he truly feels, gaining confidence in his own self. I wish to be like Ken, confident in himself and emotionally strong.
"Im Just Ken" - lyrics
Doesn't seem to matter what I do
I'm always number two
No one knows how hard I tried, oh-oh, I
I have feelings that I can't explain
Drivin' me insane
All my life, been so polite
But I'll sleep alone tonight
'Cause I'm just Ken, anywhere else I'd be a ten
Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?
I'm just Ken
Where I see love, she sees a friend
What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?
I wanna know what's like to love, to be the real thing
Is it a crime? Am I not hot when I'm in my feelings?
And is my moment finally here, or am I dreaming?
I'm no dreamer
Can you feel the Kenergy?
Feels so real, my Kenergy
Can you feel the Kenergy?
Feels so real, my Kenergy
I'm just Ken, anywhere else I'd be a ten
Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?
I'm just Ken
Where I see love, she sees a friend
What will it take for her to see the man behind the tan and fight for me?
I'm just Ken (and I'm enough)
And I'm great at doing stuff
So, hey, check me out, yeah, I'm just Ken
My name's Ken (and so am I)
Put that manly hand in mine
So, hey, world, check me out, yeah, I'm just Ken
Baby, I'm just Ken (nobody else, nobody else)
